TROMBONE LITERATURE:

Recommended Method Books, Solos and Duets

For a talented and dedicated trombonist, nothing is better than private lessons.  However for a variety of reasons, financial and geographical, this may not be possible for some students.  Given the enormous amount of study materials, how does anyone know what books and solos to use?

The handout linked on this page lists my recommended books, solos and duets.  The methods and duets are grouped by age level, while the solos are intended for high school students.  Many teachers use their Textbook budgets to build a lending library of these etude and duet books.  The easiest solos are:

- Barat Andante & Allegro
- Both Marcello Sonatas
- Ropartz Andante and Allegro
- Telemann Sonata

For trombone ensembles, I will blushingly recommend three of my own arrangements, listed on this website under Music for Trombones: Four Trombones/Choir:

- Beethoven Drei Equali (of the two use the bass clef version)
- Brahms Songs for Trombones
- Schubert Songs for Trombones

I have done all of these with high school players with good results.  These may be purchased from the publisher's website.

Two good sites for all the music are:

Hickeys.com  (in Ithaca, NY; will usually have all of this music)

Amazon.com (may have some)
